What happens to water-contaminated mixed fuel after collection?

In brief

At a permitted facility the water layer is separated and treated as contaminated water, and the fuel is filtered and recovered. Petrol and diesel cannot simply be separated by settling, so mixed fuel is tested, dewatered and recovered by reprocessing: blended into industrial fuels or sent as refinery feedstock, where distillation separates it again. Paperwork for mixed fuel contaminated with water

It moves on a consignment note (special waste in Scotland) from you to the carrier to the permitted facility, and each keeps a copy.

What water in mixed fuel does to value

Water reduces the value of a load roughly in proportion to how much there is. A little water barely changes the terms; a load that is mostly water may carry a charge.
