What are the dangers of mixed fuel?
In brief
Treat mixed fuel like petrol: highly flammable at normal temperatures, harmful if swallowed and it enters the airways, and toxic to aquatic life. Call 07950 582635 or send an enquiry.
Fire and explosion risk of mixed fuel
Mixed fuel has a flash point often below normal air temperatures, even with a small share of petrol. Keep it away from flames, sparks, welding and hot surfaces, and store it in ventilated, bunded areas.
Mixed fuel and the environment
Fuel is toxic to aquatic life and spreads across water. Treat it as a petrol spill: remove ignition sources, ventilate, protect drains and report anything that could reach water.
Mixed fuel in practice
Mixed fuel is the most common waste fuel from vehicle depollution and misfuel drains, and it usually still has recoverable value.

Terms used in this answer
- DSEAR
- The Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. They require employers to assess and control fire and explosion risks from substances such as petrol.
- Flash point
- The lowest temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to catch light. Petrol's is around minus 40 °C; diesel's is above 55 °C.
| Density at 15°C | Between petrol and diesel, about 720–845 kg/m³ depending on the mix |
|---|---|
| Flash point | Can be below normal air temperatures with only a small share of petrol |
| Transport | Usually UN1268 or UN1203, class 3, packing group II |
| Fuel | Mixed fuel |
| Also called | mixed petrol and diesel, cross-contaminated fuel, petroleum distillates |
| Waste code | 13 07 03* (other fuels (including mixtures)) |
